Continuing on as we approach the Apologetics Awareness Week, let me share with you why I believe apologetics is very important and very necessary for Christians and for the Church today. Here is my “ugly statement.” Believers who would like to be effective in their evangelism and discple-making must understand three reasons why apologetics is important and necessary for Christians and the Church.
Reason #1: Scripture Commands that We Give a Reason for Why We Believe.
Apologetics can help you do all these things. On the other hand, the does Bible warn us that the heart is deceitful above all (Jeremiah 17:9), that we should not trust our own heart (Proverbs 28:26), that we can be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin (Hebrews 3:13), that we are in a battle with spiritual powers of wickedness (Ephesians 6:12), that we should be sober-minded and vigilant because the devil is seeking to devour us like a lion (1 Peter 5:8), that there are none who are righteous nor seek after God (Romans 3:10-11 from Psalm 14:1-2 and 53:1-2), that we should be on guard against deceitful human teachings (Colossians 2:8), and that we should watch out for false prophets who may even fool the elect with great signs (Matthew 7:15 and 24:24).
Apologetics is the answer to help us think clearly and not fall victim to a deceitful heart that is easily misled by fleeting emotions.
Reason #2: Apologetics is Practical For Life and Ministry and Not Some Mental Exercise.
Practically, apologetics can help those in and out of the Church. As many as 70% of youths are leaving the Church primarily due to reasons related to apologetics. People, between the ages of 16-30 are walking away. Young people today have a difficult time articulating their faith, which brings about questions when they are challenged by someone skeptical of religion and more specifically Christianity.
When those questions come, our younger generations are having difficulty answering the simplest of questions about faith. However those helping them are places like the internet and people giving books that they will never read, are finding the answers they are getting are not being answered in a fulfilling way. As a result, people are opting for “science” (which is more like scientism) and “reason” (which is more like atheistic/antitheistic rhetoric) instead of sound biblical teaching and sound reasons for believing.
Apologetics answers those questions and integrates science, reason, and faith in a way that is fulfilling, consistent, and comprehensive. Apologetics is the best solution to the problem of people leaving the Church. Apologetics is something that needs to be considered in our discipleship in this “brave new world.”
Reason #3: To Be Effect We Must Admit Apologetics & Evangelism are Not Enemies.
Finally, apologetics is extremely useful for evangelism. People don’t share their faith because they lack confidence and fear that they won’t have answers. Meanwhile, non-believers mock religious belief for being anti-intellectual and opposed to reason. If you don’t believe me just check out the television with programs like Comedy Central.
Living the apologetics life, and incorporating apologetics into our evangelism gives believers confidence to share their faith, give them the answers to tough questions that people may ask, and remove intellectual barriers that prevent people from following Jesus. Ultimately, the goal of apologetics is belief and trusting the gospel. A gospel centered apologetic that points to the cross is still the only way. If you want a great example of this, just look at how Jesus did apologetics.
